  • That wasn't a common perception when this western series aired, so I was impressed with that

    • From season 4, Have Gun - Will Travel: The Poker Fiend begins with guest star Betsy Jones-Moreland, as Mrs. Neal, hiring Paladin to find her husband who left to play poker 5 1/2 months ago. He’s wealthy, and she wants him to stay that way. I’m just amused by all these women who find Paladin for jobs
like this. It’s not about love; it’s all about the money.

Jack Weston plays Neal, the husband. He’s totally in the gambling zone, and Paladin has to figure out a way of getting him out. Also guest starring is Brett Somers as Sarah. She’s not anxious for Neal to return to his wife. Then there’s ...

    • Peter Falk as Waller. He’s forcing Neal to stick around, using his casino as the lure.

This really is an episode about the addiction of gambling and actually is pretty modern as Paladin calls it a sickness. That wasn’t a common perception when this western series aired, so I was impressed with that. It doesn’t end with

an ‘all is well’ attitude either. Rather, Falk says he lost the battle, but not the war. He expects Neal to return, as does Sarah.

On the negative side, the big poker game is just too slow and melodramatic. I was bored after the first minute of it. However, the message of the show is a strong one.
