Do you have to skip ram slots

The system you are refering to does not differentiate between RAM modules for one or the other processor. All RAM is shared between the two processors. In principle there is no impact for adding memory of different size. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that you respect the channels (dual channel= 2 DIMMS, Triple channel is 3 dimms). Randy is right, there are plenty of people here who thinks they know what they are doing. Ram works in tandem and they should be uniform. Think of it like a motorway, a four lane motorway will have a bottle neck effect if you close two lanes. This means data will not flow smoothly if you use uneven memory size and speed so for 8GB you will need 4 X 2gb with the same frequency but you need to.

The motherboard I am getting (ASUS P5WD2) has four slots for memory, total of 8 Gig. I'm going to put 2 Gig in (need it for large video editing files) Am I better off to get 4 512s and fill all slots so if one goes bad I can replace at cheaper price or am I better off to go with two 1 Gig sticks? Will that board run on only 1 stick or does it need to be in pairs? If the memory needs to be installed in pairs, then I think it would be better to have 4 sticks so you can troubleshoot memory.
What do you think?
And what about memory brands? Is Altas Good? If not what is do you recommend?

  1. If you have four RAM slots, always buy matched pairs of RAM (two sticks from the same company, same speed, and same capacity) for the best results. So, in this case, where there are four slots, the RAM should have been placed in quantities of 2, 4, 6, or 8. For instance, it should have 1GB of RAM in one slot, then each successive slot should.
  2. Should You Fill All Ram Slots you twice the amount you deposited, and a lot of the times you will not be faced with too high wagering requirements. Usually, you will see wagering requirements similar to the more common 100% bonus. Check out our Should You Fill All Ram Slots list of the Most Popular Bonuses.
  3. Many PC owners won't necessarily need to ever update their RAM. But if one day you decide to, you might understandably make the assumption that adding faster and larger amounts of memory will allow.
